What can happen when life is almost completely grounded in gossip and
hearsay?
Join us for Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s sharp and sassy satire of the lives and
loves of London’s upper crust in the late 1700’s.
Meet Lady Sneerwell and her salon: Sir Benjamin Backbite and his uncle,
Crabtree, masters of the barbed compliment and Mrs. Candor, who doesn’t consider it
gossip if she’s only repeating what she’s heard.
Then there are the Teazles, mismatched marrieds, and the Surfaces, a lord and
his wayward nephews, fighting over a fortune.
Add to this some non-servile servants, a couple of sidekick schemers, a money
lender or two, and a young heiress who would rather be anywhere than where she finds
herself, and you have this 18 th century version of fake-news obsession.
